Amit Patankar

R&D ENGINEER

Amit is a mechanical engineer with a strong passion for renewable energy and pollution abatement. He comes from Thane, a growing city next to the metropolis of Mumbai in India. To develop expertise in the domain, he took up a Masters degree in Renewable Energy Engineering at the ANU in 2019. During his degree, he focused on solar energy conversion (especially solar thermal) systems.

After graduation, he added hydrogen and water electrolysis to his interests. He joined the ACT-H₂ program as a Research Officer, taking on a large chunk of prototype design and manufacturing work. He also investigates solar power systems, power electronics and helps the team run electrochemical tests.

He has previously worked at Siemens Ltd in the R&D team of energy management, medium voltage and systems (circuit breakers) division.

Amit is also an avid stargazer and a skilled telescope operator. He has conducted public stargazing events for 12+ years and has written a book (Sky Hunt with Telescopes) to help young amateur astronomers quickly get used to the mechanics of telescopes and the night sky. He strongly believes that this experience helps him understand the sun’s motion easily and gives him a deeper understanding of solar farms. Amit loves to make working models and goes wall-climbing and hiking in his free time.
